Helambu Circuit Trek

The Helambu region is just 75km north of Kathmandu and lying south of the main Himalayan chain, it provides an ideal example of typical hill life in Nepal.

A circuit can be made through the area from Kathmandu and the route begins in areas of Hindu influence and goes through Buddhist villages. Sherpas are the main inhabitants here but their language, culture and dress are different from those of the Solu Khumbu ( Everest ) Sherpas. Helambu women have a reputation for being very beautiful and the Helambu Sherpanis wear dresses of red printed cotton instead of the Tibetan-style black dress & colourful apron of their Solu-Khumbu counterparts.

Highlights

  • Good scenery & culture as trails wind through timeless villages of the Tamang hill people and the Helambu Sherpas.
  • Spectacular panoramic view of the Kathmandu valley
  • Good views of the Langtang & Gosainkund peaks

Helambu is a good trekking destination throughout the Oct - May trekking season. Its relatively low altitude means that treks in this area is feasible even during the coldest month of winter ( January ) and there's little chance of attitude problems although one still needs to be prepared for cold and possible snow at the highest reaches of the trek.

NOTE: This trek can be combined with any of the Langtang treks for a longer and more challenging trek. For a short trek of the Langtang region, the 15-day Langtang Valley Trek is ideal. Side trips of additional days can be made to high altitude alpine lakes not visited by many trekkers.
