Nepal
Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek
At 8167m Dhaulagiri is the seventh highest mountain
in the world. The remote and wild landscape which characterises Dhaulagiri's
rugged western slopes makes this trek a relatively arduous undertaking
quite unlike most other trekking routes in Nepal. This is an adventure
that walks the fine line between trekking and mountaineering and is
ideal for those that thrive on rugged and remote trails that see only
a handful of trekkers each season.
This rarely frequented itinerary starts in Pokhara
and leads, through rice-terraces, up to Beni and farther up through
picturesque villages of Tibetan culture along the Myagdi Khola, to the
very heart of the Dhaulagiri massif. At the higher reaches, much of
the route is on snow and glaciers as it leads to Dhaulagiri Base Camp
and crosses the French Pass (5360m), traverses the head of beautiful
Hidden Valley and crosses Dhampus Pass (5230m). Although we pass through
a few villages in the earlier part of the trek there are no tea shops
until after Dhampus Pass and many of our campsites are in isolated positions.

In terms of physical demands, a very high level of
fitness is required ( it is more siong than Annapurna Circuit or EBC
trek ! ). The trek will involve crossing over glaciers and walking some
very narrow, potentially hazardous trail and rough terrain. Mountaineering
experience is not a pre-requisite but the ability to keep your nerve
during sustained difficulties is essential. It is essential that you
are physically and mentally well prepared and that your personal equipment
is of the highest standard. You must be prepared for the possibility
of bad weather and difficult conditions, be responsive to changeable
conditions, and be able to work as a team with other group members.
OK, all the scare-mongering aside though, this is a
truly awesome hike through some of the best scenery in western Nepal.
