Langtang Winter Hill Walking Orientation Trek

Lying just south of Tibet, the Langtang region is a suitable place for this program with its numerous glaciers and surrounding small snow-clad peaks of 5000-m or higher. The trail itself offers trekkers an exceptional diversity of scenery and culture.

This LWT trek is for those looking for a bit more challenge than a standard Nepal trek with a bit of alpine trekking as it incorporates what we call a "winter hillwalking" program whereby participants are introduced to the finer points of winter hill walking. Participants will be oriented on the basics of gear preparation, proper techniques on movement over snow & glacier ... and basic proficiency in the use of alpine equipment such as crampons & ice axes. The trek up to snowy Tsergo Ri in winter offers participants plenty of opportunities to put their new found skills to practice. At the end of the program, we will cross over from Langtang to the Helambu region either by Ganja La (5106m) - considered as one of the steeper and more difficult major passes in Nepal and crossing is possible only if weather permits - or take another route to visit the holy lakes of Gosainkund, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, before returning to Kathmandu.

Do note that due to time constraints, the syllabic content is not exhaustive and it does NOT aim to equip beginners with the skills and knowledge necessary for a climbing expedition, of which a basic alpine climbing course such as those available in New Zealand is strongly recommended.

In our 1st LWT, Dr Shani Tan facilitate this exciting new trek program. A keen outdoor person with over 20 years of experience in climbing and trekking in various parts of the world, Shani has a keen interest in Wilderness Medicine; in particular High Altitude Medicine. Shani is a member of the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) and the International Society for Mountain Medicine (ISMM) and her extensive expedition experience included being the Expedition Doctor to the successful First Singapore Mount Everest Expedition in 1998.
