Gunung Ayam & Jelawang Falls Trek
Gunung Ayam ( 'Chicken' ) is located just next to Gunung
Stong in Dabong Forest Reserve in the northern Malayasian state
of Kelantan. The jungle forests here is really pristine the locals swear
that there are interesting but elusive wildlife such as elephants &
tigers in this area.
Do not be deceived by its name; at 1504m, Gunung Ayam stands about
70m taller than its neighbour. The trek to Gunung Ayam is a much longer
& taxing endeavour. While the trek up to Stong summit takes about
3-4 hours, an additional 4-5 hours is expected for the trek up &
down from the Gunung Ayam summit. That's at least 9 hours of trekking
in a single day !
For the fit and adventurous, this challenging trek may just be the
sweat-it-out that you're looking. For the uninitiated, you need to be
well prepared with good physical and mental fitness. This is a rugged
trek but the trekker is rewarded by cool weather & fresh air near
the summit and if camping overnight there, by the beautiful sunrise
breaking over the sea of golden-hued clouds clustered just below the
top of the mountain at dawn.
After the long hard trek, we shall descend to Stong waterfalls to have
a short refreshing dip & wash in its pools before bidding goodbye
to this majestic fall. This is a good primer for more challenging mountain
adventures in the future !

The climate is tropically humid and a trek in such condition is physically
draining. The night below the Ayam summit can be chilly in the early
morning just before dawn. Everyone needs to be prepared for bad weather
with basic waterproofing gear (ponchos, rain-coats, even umbrellas are
helpful ...!). Waterproofing for your backpack is a must.
The trek up to Ayam camp is steep and unrelentless on well-trodden
jungle steps and trails which occasionally give way to smooth mud paths.
These paths can be very slippery when it rains. Having a pair of good
hiking boots will make a lot of difference and gives you better grip
on muddy grounds. A walking stick is especially useful in such conditions.
Compared to the Stong summit trek which is a light and fast affair,
the Ayam summit trek is physically much more taxing as the trek duration
is more than doubled. In the humid tropic, this can make a big difference.
This challenging Ayam summit trek is recommended only for those with
good endurance & fitness.
