Mount Ophir ( Gunung Ledang ) 12-Hour Day Trek
This is our shortest Mount Ophir trek. Both the ascent
& descent route is by the Sagil trail as its location in Johor makes
for shorter travelling time from & back to Singapore.
Trek members need to be very
very fit as we shall be trekking up and down the full
height of Mount Ophir ( 1,276 metres ) within one day. This is a non-technical hike but is especially physically demanding due to the
time limitation. The only consolation is that you won't be carrying
a heavy backpack for this trek.
As this is a day hike, no leave is required but we need to depart early and will only arrive back Singapore after nightfall. Charter transport will bring us to the foot of
the mountain in the wee hours of the morning and transfer us back home at night
within the same day.
The trek is not suitable for a person who is only
moderately fit. Only strong trekkers need apply for the trip. To join,
all participants are advised to register early and join our weekly GCS
to tune up their fitness first.
Summit Trails: Mount Ophir can be
climbed from either the Malacca or Johor side. From Malacca, the trail
starts at the Asahan village near the reservoir and this is more straight
forward and shorter compared to the Johor side. The trail from Johor
starts near Sagil village beside a cascade of waterfall within the grounds
of Gunung Ledang Resort.

The climate is tropically humid and a trek in such conditions will be physically
draining. The night in camp can be chilly in the early morning just
before dawn. Everyone needs to be prepared for bad weather with basic
waterproofing gear ( ponchos, rain-coats, even umbrellas are helpful
...! ). Waterproofing for your backpack is a must.
The trek up to camp can be very slippery when it rains. Having a pair
of good hiking boots will make a lot of difference and gives you better
grip on wet / muddy grounds. A trekking pole is especially useful in
such conditions. Those going to summit need to be prepared to handle
more technical terrain such as pulling yourself up ( and down ) 2-storey
high boulders using fixed ropes so the trek is obviously not for those
with height phobia.
