Ken Waterfalls Day Hike

Located near Gunung Muntahak in the outskirts of Kota Tinggi town ( Johor State ), Ken Falls is a newly discovered waterfalls with a series of 4 cascades each of about 30m high with shallow pools at its bottom.

Its close proximity to Singapore makes it an ideal day trip for those looking for a fairly easy and short waterfall trek away from the bustle of city life. The trek starts off by walking across the plain with a few shallow streams to cross. However shallow it seems, you can't really see your feet at all the moment you step in; it is marshy. The streams that we're crossing is the same stream that flows from the waterfall (Ken), as it meanders across the plain while we are making a bee line towards the waterall. The walk across the open will take about an hour to arrive at the fringe of the forest before the group ventures into the forest trail. From here it is another 45min to an hour of trekking up hill, passing a few cascades and small waterfalls before reaching the main waterfall.

It is very rare that a trek has a combination of an open and forest trail, both with stream crossings which is ideal for a hot and sunny day trek - cooling and refreshing. With lunch break and R&R, the entire hike will take about 5 - 6 hours.

We recommend all trekkers going for this trek wear a pair of durable sandal because of the stream crossings at some marshy section. Covered shoe, in this case is not ideal. However, there are down sides of wearing sandal; toes and feet are not protected; does not provide good traction as compared to good trekking shoe/boots etc. Please do take care and be warned.

The climate is tropically humid and a trek in such condition can be physically draining. Everyone needs to be prepared for bad weather with basic waterproofing gear such as ponchos and rain-coats ( even umbrellas in camp is helpful ...! ). Waterproofing for your backpack is a must in the wet season and a trekking pole or walking stick would be useful.

The paths can be very slippery even during dry weather. A walking stick may also be useful for the trek. And if it's the rainy season, be prepared for leeches ... your insect repellent may just be your saviour !
