Sikkim Kangchenjunga Trek
Mount Kangchenjunga - at 8598-m the third highest mountain on earth
straddling Nepal and Sikkim - is the focal point of Sikkim and its people
and their culture. It is not just a mountain, but the Sikkimese protective
deity. The Sikkimese believe that it is not meant to be climbed, but
only worshipped, as it is the abode of "The Five Treasures of the
Great Snow". In deference to local sentiments, no expedition has
set foot on its main summit peak - but remained a few meters below.
The main highlight of this trip is the popular 9-day roundabout trek
to the 4984-m high ) viewpoint of Goecha La ( the Lock Pass ) which
offer a sensational view of the huge southeast face of Kangchenjunga.
Our trip will take us through lush verdant forests,
rhododendron-covered hillsides, tiny yak-herders' summer settlements
on high meadows, remote monasteries tended by red-robed Tibetan Lamas,
and up to high glacier moraines and passes with magnificent views of
white jagged glacial peaks.
Before starting on the trek, we will have an opportunity
to take a glimpse into the Tibetan monastic culture of this largely
untouristed mountain kingdom with a visit to one of its major monasteries.
We will drive though rugged mountain roads as well as visit someof the
most revered and beautiful monasteries in Sikkim. Our stops also include
the famous former British hillstation of Darjeeling where we will get
to see the famous sunrise from Tiger Hill as well as a visit to the
Himalaya Mountaineering Institute where there is an extensive permanent
exhibition on Everest and its climbing history.
To complete your Sikkim experience, there is the option
to extend your adventure ( 3 days ) to beautiful North Sikkim - where
the high plains parallel that of the Tibetan plateau. This trip to the
remote and beautiful western Sikkim promises to be one unforgettable
experience for all.
