Climbing

" To face the challenge of what appears to be a sheer rock face, to find within yourself the physical and mental strength to overcome the various obstacles that arise, and to finally sit at the top and reflect on your achievement that put you in tune with yourself and with nature . . . "

The sport of climbing started in Singapore around mid to late 1980s with self-taught climbers exploring the cliffs of Dairy Farm Quarry. In 1989, the Singapore Advisory Council on Sports and Recreation identified climbing as one of the sports which can help build a more rugged society. The same year, the first permanent artificial climbing wall was built in SAFRA Tampines, and in 1990 the first national rock-wall climbing competition was organised.

Since then the sport has grown by leaps and bounds in Singapore, with some 130,000 people having taking up climbing and many climbing walls being installed in schools and premises of uniform organizations. Rock-wall climbing was then re-termed as “sport climbing” to be in line with international calling in 1997. In 2001, a record-breaking 850 climbers participated in the "Rock On 2001" ( or the National Sport Climbing Championship ), reflecting the popularity of the sport in Singapore. In August 2002, the UIAA-ICC Climbing World Cup 2002 was held in Singapore.

The Singapore National Climbing Standards ( SNCS ) was officially launched on 18 July 1998. This is an important milestone in the development of climbing in Singapore as it sets in place a national standard and guidelines for the sport of climbing. The SNCS is fully endorsed by the Singapore Sport Council and administered and regulated by the Singapore Mountaineering Federation. From the SNCS was approved a series of climbing courses from basic to instructor training courses.
